Our StoryCenturies of history

Our company, Azienda Agricola Barone Cornacchia, has a long heritage. Its roots lie in the late fifteenth century when the Cornacchia family received a baronial title from the King of Naples and the responsibility of controlling the vast estates surrounding the Fortress of Civitella (TE), on the borderland of the Bourbon Kingdom.

The LandOur Vineyards

This area has always shown a vocation for viticulture, characterized by hills with excellent exposure, stony calcareous soil and an ideal microclimate thanks to its proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the mountain regions of Gran Sasso d’Italia and Montagne Gemelle. In early 1900, Baron Filippo Vizzarro Cornacchia took up the wine-making tradition, selecting ancient clones and planting new vineyards. In 1969, the Montepulciano clone R/7 Biotype Teramano was selected from a Cornacchia family vineyard, and until 2002 it was among very few clones of this variety to be grown across Abruzzo. Today, the company is proud of its 60 hectares under vines and 40 hectares of arable land.

OursGrapes

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is the most widely grown black grape in southern and central Italy, particularly in Adriatic regions. It probably originated from Torre dei Passeri or Valle Peligna and proliferated from there.  It is a lush, plentiful variety but at certain altitudes and with low yields, truly excellent quality can be achieved. It is also internationally recognised for producing one of the most widely celebrated rosé wines in this category. The DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo classification was established in 1968 and embraces the entire region. This prestigious grape variety has since also been included in the DOCG Colline Teramane and DOC Controguerra classifications.

Trebbiano

Trebbiano refers to a huge family of sub-varieties. Pliny the Elder refers to it in his work Naturalis Historia. In Italy, the different varieties are distributed across most regions. It is also widespread in France, where it arrived in Avignon with the papacy, spreading to surrounding regions under the name Ugni Blanc.

Passerina

This white grape was also known as Trebbiano di Teramo in the past. This is a thriving variety with strong disease resistance. It is found in the DOC Controguerra classification.

Pecorino

Originally, this grape was grown in the foothills of the Apennines, in the North of Abruzzo and South of the Marche region. The variety was previously abandoned before being rediscovered during the ‘80s. It guarantees complex, well-structured wines.
